Do-it-yourselfers welcome

The practical enclosure, built properly.

Chain link is hard to beat when the job is containment: keeping pets and kids in, keeping equipment secure, and fencing large areas without a large budget.

We install galvanized and black or green vinyl-coated systems in residential and commercial heights, with walk and double-drive gates.

Key benefits of chain link fencing

Many styles and heights in stock at our South Dennis shop and yard.

Best value per foot

Encloses the most ground for the least money without cutting corners on posts.

Very low maintenance

Galvanized and coated systems shrug off weather with no refinishing.

Secure containment

Ideal for dogs, play areas, courts, dumpster pens and equipment storage.

Coated color options

Black or green vinyl coating blends into landscaping far better than bare steel.

Set on solid posts

Properly sized and concreted line, corner and terminal posts keep runs tight.

Gates to suit

Walk gates, wide double-drive gates, and hardware sized for real daily use.

Chain Link Fencing around the Cape

Chain link fencing on Cape Cod: practical, durable, affordable

Chain link is the most enclosure you can buy per dollar, and when it is built properly it lasts for decades with essentially no attention. Here is how to specify it so it does its job and still looks the way you want it to.

When chain link is the right choice

Chain link earns its keep when the objective is containment rather than screening. Keeping a dog safely in the yard, fencing a play area, enclosing a large back lot, securing equipment or materials, penning a dumpster, surrounding a court — these are jobs where a solid fence adds cost without adding function.

Its second advantage is scale. Because the material cost per foot is low, chain link makes it feasible to enclose an area that would be prohibitively expensive in wood, vinyl or aluminum. A homeowner with a large lot can fence the entire perimeter rather than settling for a partial run.

Its third advantage is toughness. Chain link flexes under impact instead of breaking, shrugs off weather, and does not care about mud, dogs, balls or equipment. In a working environment it simply outlasts prettier options.

Galvanized versus vinyl-coated

Galvanized chain link is steel with a protective zinc coating. It is the classic silver fence, it is the least expensive option, and it holds up well — though on an exposed coastal site the finish works harder than it would inland, so the weight of the galvanizing matters.

Vinyl-coated chain link adds a bonded polymer layer over the galvanized wire, in black or green. This does two things: it adds a second barrier against corrosion, and it dramatically changes how the fence reads visually. Black-coated mesh recedes into hedging and treeline in a way that bare steel never does — from any distance you see the yard rather than the fence.

For residential work on the Cape we recommend coated mesh most of the time. The upcharge is modest, the corrosion protection is genuinely useful in salt air, and the appearance difference is the reason most homeowners stop objecting to chain link entirely.

Framework, mesh gauge and what makes it last

A chain link fence is only as good as its framework. Terminal posts — ends, corners and gate posts — carry all the tension in the fabric and must be larger in diameter and set deeper than the line posts between them. Skimping there is the most common failure we are called out to fix: the corners lean inward and the whole run goes slack.

Mesh gauge and mesh size are the other specification that matters. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire and a stronger fabric; smaller openings mean better containment for small dogs and less footholds for climbing. Residential and commercial fabrics differ meaningfully here, and the right choice depends on what is on each side of the fence.

Then there is tension. Fabric must be pulled tight and secured with a tension bar and bands at every terminal post, with a top rail or tension wire keeping the upper edge in line. A properly tensioned fence rings when you tap it; a poorly tensioned one waves in the wind and sags within a year.

Gates, dog runs and access

Gates take more abuse than any other component, which is why gate posts are sized up and set deeper than everything around them. A single walk gate three or four feet wide handles daily foot traffic. A double-drive gate is the answer where a mower, trailer, truck or delivery needs to get through — and it is far cheaper to build that opening now than to cut one in later.

For dog runs the details shift. Bottom clearance should be minimal or the fabric secured to a tension wire at ground level so a determined digger cannot push under. Height depends entirely on the animal, and latch choice matters because plenty of dogs learn to work a simple drop latch.

Think about where gates go before the posts are set. The natural walking route between the driveway, the door, the shed and the trash is usually obvious once you stand in the yard, and putting gates on those lines is the difference between a fence you barely notice and one you resent every day.

Appearance, privacy options and upkeep

Chain link has an image problem that is largely solved by two decisions: choose black coated mesh, and plant something along it. Coated fabric against a hedge, treeline or perennial border reads as almost nothing, and within two or three seasons the planting does the rest of the work.

Where more screening is wanted, privacy slats woven through the mesh are an inexpensive option that converts an open fence into a partial screen. It will not match the appearance of a solid cedar or vinyl fence, but on a work yard, a court perimeter, or a utility area it is a sensible, budget-conscious solution.

Upkeep is close to nothing. Hose off salt and dirt occasionally, keep vines from loading the top rail, check the tension bands and gate hardware annually, and address any damaged fabric while it is a small area. A well-built chain link fence routinely stays in service for decades with nothing more than that.

All Cape Fence just installed a stockade picket fence all around my property to include a beautiful gate. Let me just say that these guys are the best! Top quality material and experienced/excellent installers. My neighbors were also very impressed. They installed the fence right on the timeline that we agreed to and everything went perfect from start to finish. I highly recommend All Cape Fence. All Cape Fence did a great job installing our new scalloped fence. We have a good size frontage so the new fence replaced our split rail fence. This one adds a luxury look to our property. The price was excellent. The boss was accurate with the timeline of installation. His crew installed the fence in about 4 hours. They were meticulous in regards to the installation process. We are happy. You can’t go wrong with ALL CAPE FENCE. they have installed all our fences as well as an outside shower.

Unlike some other fencing, their fences have dowels that fit sections together. Good product and the office people and installers are friendly and professional. Highly recommend!

We needed some fencing for our garden and, after looking around, decided to go with All Cape Fencing. We worked with Ralph, who was exceptionally friendly and patient, to figure out dimensions and spacing. Then our 30 feet of custom-made fencing was ready in less than a week. We really appreciated Ralph and the whole process. Great local company.
