Vinyl Fencing around the Cape

A complete guide to vinyl (PVC) fencing on Cape Cod

Vinyl fence has earned its place on the Cape for one simple reason: it looks finished on day one and asks almost nothing of you afterward. Here is what actually separates good PVC fence from the material that disappoints people.

What vinyl fencing is, and what it is not

Vinyl fence — PVC — is an extruded plastic system built from hollow posts, rails and pickets that lock together over a structural framework. Quality varies enormously between products, and the difference is mostly invisible at a glance: wall thickness, the amount of UV stabilizer in the formulation, the way rails are reinforced, and how the posts are anchored.

That variability is why so many homeowners have opposing opinions about vinyl. Thin-wall material bought as a bargain will look excellent for two summers, then chalk, sag between posts and crack the first time something bumps it. Heavy-wall vinyl with a proper UV package behaves completely differently, holding its colour and its line for decades in full sun and salt spray.

We sell the heavier material because the light stuff generates callbacks and regret. If you are comparing quotes and one number is dramatically lower, the difference is almost always in the extrusion, not in the labour.

Privacy, picket and pool styles

Privacy vinyl is the most popular configuration: tongue-and-groove pickets forming a solid panel between posts, typically with a decorative top rail or lattice accent. It gives an immediate, clean screen and it looks identical from both sides, which removes the usual good-side-bad-side conversation with a neighbour.

Picket vinyl covers everything from a low dooryard fence to a full-height spaced picket run. Because vinyl is white and stays white, picket profiles read very crisply against lawn and planting — this is the style that most often gets chosen for street frontage on renovated properties.

Pool enclosures are their own category. The requirements around barrier height, spacing between members and self-closing, self-latching gates are non-negotiable, and vinyl handles them well because the material is unaffected by splash-out, chlorine and constant damp. We build pool-code layouts routinely and will lay out the enclosure with the inspection in mind rather than after it.

How vinyl performs in a coastal environment

Salt is the enemy of most building materials and largely irrelevant to vinyl. There is nothing to corrode and nothing to rot, which is why PVC is such a strong option for waterfront and near-water properties where wood needs more attention and steel needs a coating system.

Sun is the real variable. UV exposure is what causes cheap vinyl to chalk and yellow, so the stabilizer package in the formulation matters more on an open, south-facing Cape lot than it would in a shaded suburban yard. Quality material is engineered specifically for this and stays white through decades of summers.

Wind is the third factor, and it is a design question rather than a material one. A solid privacy panel catches wind like a sail, so post size, embedment depth and spacing must be specified for the exposure of the site. Vinyl that is properly posted rides out Cape storms; vinyl set in undersized holes does not, regardless of how good the panels are.

Cost over the life of the fence

Vinyl generally costs more than an equivalent run of wood at installation. Comparing those two numbers alone is misleading, because a wood fence that is stained to hold its colour carries a recurring cost every few years in either materials or labour, and vinyl carries essentially none.

Run the arithmetic across ten or fifteen years and vinyl frequently comes out level or ahead — especially on long runs, on properties that are rented or seasonally occupied, and for owners who simply do not want another maintenance item on the list. The absence of scheduled upkeep also has a value that does not show up on a spreadsheet.

Where wood still wins on cost is short runs, rustic styles like split rail, and any situation where the look of real cedar is the point. We sell both and we will tell you honestly which one fits the property and the budget in front of us.

Installation, cleaning and long-term care

Installation quality shows up in the details: posts set plumb and to a consistent height, rails locked properly into the posts, panels sitting level across a grade change, and gates hung so they swing true and latch without lifting. Vinyl is unforgiving of sloppy layout because its lines are so crisp — any wander in the post line is visible from the street.

Care is genuinely minimal. Hose the fence down once a season, and use mild soap and a soft brush for anything stubborn like pollen film, algae on a shaded north face, or grass clipping stains. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents, which can dull the surface that makes vinyl easy to clean in the first place.

Beyond that, check gate hardware annually and keep string trimmers off the bottom rail. A vinyl fence that is washed occasionally and whose gates are kept adjusted will look essentially the same in year fifteen as it did in year one, which is exactly why people choose it.

All Cape Fence just installed a stockade picket fence all around my property to include a beautiful gate. Let me just say that these guys are the best! Top quality material and experienced/excellent installers. My neighbors were also very impressed. They installed the fence right on the timeline that we agreed to and everything went perfect from start to finish. I highly recommend All Cape Fence. All Cape Fence did a great job installing our new scalloped fence. We have a good size frontage so the new fence replaced our split rail fence. This one adds a luxury look to our property. The price was excellent. The boss was accurate with the timeline of installation. His crew installed the fence in about 4 hours. They were meticulous in regards to the installation process. We are happy. You can’t go wrong with ALL CAPE FENCE. they have installed all our fences as well as an outside shower.

Unlike some other fencing, their fences have dowels that fit sections together. Good product and the office people and installers are friendly and professional. Highly recommend!

We needed some fencing for our garden and, after looking around, decided to go with All Cape Fencing. We worked with Ralph, who was exceptionally friendly and patient, to figure out dimensions and spacing. Then our 30 feet of custom-made fencing was ready in less than a week. We really appreciated Ralph and the whole process. Great local company.
